Del Norte Rotarians Celebrate

St. Patrick's Day in Style!

On Sunday, the 19th, about 40 Rotarians celebrated  St. Paddy’s  Day with a Dinner Party at the home of Rotarians Dave & Maureen Anderson.  Green shirts, green hats, green decorations and green food abounded.  A traditional meal of corned beef, cabbage, potatoes, and carrots highlighted the event.  Salads, casseroles, and soda bread complimented the entrees.    Monica Padilla provided some spectacular green cupcakes for dessert.

There was  Irish whiskey for a toast led by Rotarian and real Irish Lass, Maureen Callaghan Anderson.  There were Irish jokes, and Irish songs.  We  were divided into groups and were tested on our knowledge of St Patrick’s Day history and Irish traditions.  Did you know that Murphy is the most popular Irish name?

THE LATEST IN ALZHEIMER’S AND DEMENTIA RESEARCH

Ron Eppes, fellow Rotarian and Program Director at the NM Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, shared some significant insights into the world of Alzheimer’s and Dementia at our recent meeting.  Currently, more than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease, and 11 million are serving as their caregivers.  In New Mexico the Association serves 43,000 people living with the disease and their 85,000 family caregivers.

Ron left his 18 year corporate position at Intel in May of 2021 to join the Alzheimer’s Association after his mother was diagnosed with the disease.  The Association works to provide education and support to the millions who face dementia every day, while advancing critical research toward methods of treatment, prevention, and ultimately, a cure.

Although the terms Alzheimer’s and Dementia are often interchangeable, dementia is a syndrome, with Alzheimer’s being the most common cause of dementia.  People can have Alzheimer’s up to 20 years before it is realized that they even  have it.

There are numerous risk factors that can contribute to cognitive decline, including genetics, race, gender, diet, environment, dramatic injury, diabetes and high blood pressure.  Interestingly enough, hearing loss can also contribute to Alzheimer’s due to the loss of socialization. The good news is that many of these factors can be improved upon, especially things that have to do with diet, like cutting down on the volume of processed foods  that we consume.   The Association is currently conducting a study focused on lifestyle changes that can improve chances of not getting this disease.

The Alzheimer’s Association is actively participating in many research programs centered on therapies to treat Alzheimer’s by lessening the symptoms.  Unfortunately, none of the treatments that have been developed will stop or prevent the disease.  One of the newest exciting research projects is the development of a blood test that diagnosis Alzheimer’s or Dementia.  Although every study is not a success, they all help scientists learn more about the disease that they are addressing.

Thankfully Rotary International is an International Partner with the Alzheimer’s Association, which is the third largest non-profit funding organization in the world.  If you would like more information about Alzheimer’s or the Association please contact Ron at 505-404-9837 or rdeppes@alz.org.

Around the Club

Thank you to the Fundraising Committee who planned the recent Dinner/Dance for our Founder’s Day celebration. It was a special evening—great food, fabulous music and wonderful fellowship.

Dave Anderson gave special thanks to Rotarian, Fred Bryant, who is always there to make sure that every project is the best it can be.

Happy Birthday to Dave Anderson, Phyllis Pepin, Stephanie Sanchez, Mick Burke and Ray Nelson.

Happy 11th Wedding Anniversary to JJ and Kristi Jain.

Happy Club Anniversaries to Kurt Kinifick for 11 years, Fritz Eberle for 3 years and Mike Creedon for 30 years. Happy Anniversary to our Charter Members for their 35 year membership: Rob Butler, Norm Liss, Charles Ewing, Sam Carnes, Richard Follingstad, Chet Stewart, and Mary Strohacker.

Fred Bryant announced that our club had 52 people donate blood for the District Conference Blood Challenge. The District goal of 1000 donations from all the clubs in the District was met.

Kathie Williams noted that for the next two months any qualified guests brought to the club will have their lunches paid for by the Membership Committee. In addition, the sponsors of a new member inducted into our club in the next two months will receive a Paul Harris Award. This a great time to bring your guests and introduce them to Rotary.

Ladies Membership Tea

Set for May 13

On Saturday, May 13, the Del Norte Rotary Club will hold a Ladies Only Membership Tea at the home of Rotarian Donette Wagner at 2:00PM.   Women in our club are asked to bring a potential new female member as a guest.  This Tea will feature traditional English Tea Sandwiches and Treats, along with Champagne.

Since 1988 when women were admitted into Rotary, their membership has grown, as have their leadership roles in Rotary.  Despite their membership growth within Rotary, more women are needed.  Del Norte’s Reba Loverin was  a trailblazer within Rotary.  She was one of the first female District Governors in the United States.

Our hope is  that we will find more great women who will want to join Rotary.  Nationally, less than 25% of Rotarians are women.  Approximately 30% of our clubs’ members are women.

Please think of some great women that you would like to invite.

    More details will follow soon.

Auction Items Needed for Folds of Honor & Del Norte Patriot Gala

In addition to dinner,  Live & Silent Auctions will be held to raise money for the Folds of Honor New Mexico Annual Scholarship Program.

We are in need of both Live & Silent Auction items.  If you have items please contact Kathie Williams or anyone on the Fundraising Committee.  We are accepting items in many categories,  including art, travel, sports, household goods, restaurants, wine & spirits, jewelry, clothing, products, & services.  Our goal is to have items with a minimum value of $50.

One of our most popular categories in the past has been our Event section, where people bid on home dinners, beer tours, wine tastings and other experiences.  If you would be willing to host a dinner or event at your home please let us know.

We are  looking for large items for our Live Auction.  If you have travel points or timeshare points that you would like to donate, we would love to talk with you.

Thanks to everyone who participated in last year’s successful event.
