ALBUQUERQUE TOPS MARKET FOR

“IDEAL” LOCATIONS

John Ransom, SVP, Colliers NM/El Paso, reported on the Real Estate market both locally and in New Mexico in general.  Their company, which represents over 50 Brokers and Property Managers, reports that both our community and our state are getting lots of attention.  People who want to relocate are looking to us for several reasons…politics, economy and desirable location.  Just look at all the major national companies that are expanding or making Albuquerque their home:  Netflix, Facebook, Amazon, NBC Universal, Manna Capital and Intel, just to name a few.

His analysis of the various market segments showed that there is only a 1.29% vacancy rate in the Industrial segment.  The Office segment was, of course, most impacted by COVID and that vacancy rate is at 14.43%.  Unfortunately, less people are coming back to the “office” environment, except in flex mode, now that they have been able to work from home successfully.  The vacancy rate for retail is constant at about 6.43%, but there is not many “spec” buildings under construction, mostly just knockdowns and better rebuilds.

Apartments and 4-plexes dominate the multi-family segment, but a 20,000 to 30,000 unit deficit remains, with occupancy at 95%.  Right now we are short about 10 years with of apartments.  One new concept on the horizon is “rent-to-own” homes that are being built in Rental Home Communities by large venture capital companies.

If you missed this meeting you missed some great insightful information from one of the industry's most knowledgeable brokers.  We advertised this speaker in the Business Outlook and had three notable real estate developers join us for lunch just to hear this update.  Just another way Del Norte is reaching out to provide the most up-to-date information on our community.

INDIAN PUEBLO CULTURAL CENTER

REPRESENTS ALL 19 PUEBLOS IN NM

President and CEO of the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, Mike Canfield, from the Pueblo of Laguna, presented at the recent Rotary meeting and shared many interesting facts about Tribal History.  From a historical perspective, they are located on sovereign land, a concept that has been recognized since the 1500s.  Even today a cane with a silver tip from the King of Spain is passed down to the next group in charge.

The 19 New Mexico Pueblos own the Cultural Center and today has become a real business corridor.  You can go there for events, to eat, to enjoy music and museums and to shop.  There are now 2 hotels and many restaurants like Laguna Burgers, 12th Street Tavern and Starbucks on the property.  More plans are underway for the expansion of the area.

NORM LISS HONORED FOR

SERVICE

TO OUR FOUNDATION

Rotarian Norm Liss received a standing ovation from club members when Steve Becker, President of the Del Norte Rotary Foundation, honored him for his last 6 years of service to the Foundation.  As Steve so aptly said, “ We are grateful for your care, acumen, and dedication to support our local non-profit organizations.  We are proud of Norm, and appreciate all you do for our Foundation and our club.

Two Rotary members were elected to fill vacancies on the Del Norte Foundation Board — Janie Rowe and Marilyn Strube, both members of our Satellite.

FOLDS OF HONOR GALA

GIANT SUCCESS!

Almost 350 people attended the Folds of Honor Rotary Del Norte Gala on Saturday, August 20.

The Embassy Suites were ablaze with red, white and blue as we celebrated our fallen heroes and worked to earn money for survivor scholarships.

There were over 300 Silent Auction items and 10 dynamic Live Auction items bringing in a total of over $50,000.  (And that table full of Kiwanians even bought a Live Auction item)

Del Norte member Matt Hudson won the $1000 raffle cash and then generously donated $500 back to the Del Norte Foundation in hope that it would buy him immunity for life from lunch fines!  We think he’ll have to discuss that with the new Sgt. At Arms.

NEW MEMBER INDUCTED!

Past club member Carol Rickert Asbury was inducted back into the club at a recent meeting.

Carol is also a past member and past President of the Albuquerque Rotary Club.  Carol and her husband, Ted, were on hand at the meeting where Past President, Clarence Hughes welcomed her to the club.

NEW PAUL HARRIS FELLOWS AWARDED!

Tom Walker, Endowment and Major Gifts Advisor for Zone 26, was on hand to recognize two of our newest members both with a Paul Harris.  Zizi Fritz and Enrico Morelli received their awards in the form of a Rotary medallion. (Paul Harris’s are awarded from a Rotarian or a donor who has given $1000 to the Rotary Foundation or given $1000 in their name). Money in the Foundation is used to fund many programs including, Peace programs, education and polio plus.

TIME TO RALLY AROUND

THE WALK TO DEFEAT ALS

It’s time to mark your calendars for the annual Walk to Defeat ALS coming up on October 1 at the UNM Track and Soccer Complex.  In the past, our members have embraced the Walk and stepped up to the challenge to support this amazing organization with both donations and participation.  You can register to donate on the ALS Website.  Registration opens on the 1st at 8:00 am and the Walk starts at 10:00 am.

Your donation and participation will make all the difference to a family dealing with ALS.  This is an organization and an activity close to our hearts, since losing 2 of our members to this disease several years ago.  It is our way to continue to honor their memories.

AROUND THE CLUB

Congrats! To Dave and Maureen Anderson who are celebrating their Anniversary of 51 years.

And to Chet and Diana Stewart for 57 years.

Congrats!  To Mark Rickert’s son, Robert, who just got engaged, and who just might become a new Rotarian if Mark has anything to say about it.

Welcome back to the club!  Tanya McKinney.  We’ve missed you since you were on leave so we are happy that you are joining us again.  It was also good to have Miles Wolfe and John Freeman back for our meetings.

Hope you are feeling better!  Mick Burke.  We hope the surgery on your foot and leg was successful.  And we hope that you stay away from those skateboards in the future.

We wish Satellite member, Jon Helm, a speedy recovery from his recent motorcycle accident.

VP Marty Padilla became a Grandpa again last week when daughter Mikayla gave birth to a bouncing baby boy!

Thanks to Sherri Wells!  We heard the Pop Up at Fogo de Chao was great and a “good time was had by all!”   (And Happy 29th Birthday again!  Good job in getting your table to make a contribution for it).

John Freeman sent wishes of a Good Job! to all the club members and the Foundation for helping Ranchitos de Los Ninos finish their cabinet installation project.

Many thanks! To all the Rotary  Business Members that joined the new Business Membership Advertising program for the club.   With the edition of John Freeman, Cutting Edge Painting and Chet Stewart and French we now have 20  business members enrolled in the program.

Applause for Rotarian Hass Aslami who raised $10,700 for the families of the recent tragic helicopter crash thru Fundaxi and his restaurants Pizza 9, Chello Grill and Revel Burger.

Norm Liss forgot his pin, but that’s not unusual…but new member, Jayne Figueroa did too…What’s your excuse?
