Picnic in the Park is a Huge Success!
Over 30 Del Norte Rotarians met for our Annual Club Picnic at Rotary Park.  Club Service/Fellowship Chair Sherri Wells and her Committee organized the event and helped serve up delicious hamburgers from Fuddruckers and ice cream sandwiches.

Alex Lavidge, who will be inducted as a new member at our next regular meeting at the Sheraton, was in attendance  getting acquainted.  We enjoyed hearing about his Rotary experiences as both his mother and his grandfather were Rotarians.

Kathie Williams gave a report on the history of Rotary Park.  The park was dedicated by our District 5520 (then called District 552) in 1991.  The Downtown and Del Norte Clubs were the only two Rotary Clubs in Albuquerque at that time.  Trees were planted that day in honor of Rotarians throughout the District who had died during that year.

As the years have passed Del Norte has continued the tradition of having trees planted in the park to honor members of our club who have passed on. There are many plaques in honor of some of our Charter Members and Club Presidents.  Plaques for the husbands of current Rotarians, Alice Mehlberg and Ruth Ronan can be seen in the park.

As the city has stopped the tree planting program, our club will be sponsoring a bench that the city will erect for us.  It will be dedicated in memory of members of our club who have passed away.   When we are notified  that the bench is ready we will have a dedication ceremony.

The History of New Mexico Music Featured at Meeting

It was an entertaining meeting last week when New Mexico State Historian, Robert Martinez, serenaded us with a variety of songs representing the place of music in the history of New Mexico. From the roots of Indian and Spanish influence to the traditions of folk music and Jewish migrations, Robert led us through history with the strings of his guitar.

Robert shared songs that he learned from his hispanic heritage and songs that have deep roots in the working people of New Mexico, including  Catholic roots and chants of the Penitentes, and the children who sang about the Patron Saint of Farmers.

He shared a bit of Rock ’n' Roll with his rendition of “Peggy Sue”, citing the influence of Clovis’s own Buddy Holly on that era of music. Buddy, who even influenced the Beatles, was just another example of how music in New Mexico has had an impact on the world.

He finished with a native Mexican song of celebration that had many of our members singing with him.

New Members Inducted

New Members, Leah Conner and Alex Lavidge were inducted as the newest Del Norte Members by President, Mary Tieman. Leah was sponsored by Rotarian, Norm Liss and Alex by Rotarian Ron Epps.

Leah, who is a former Rotarian, also served her past  clubs as President twice. She brings a wealth of Rotary experience to the club.

Alex is a 3rd generation Rotarian and already a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a former Youth Exchange Student to Hungary when he was in high school. Alex followed up his induction with a short vocational talk, where he highlighted the Solar Company he works for and the opportunities that exist for solar in New Mexico. Alex, grew up in Tennessee and was inspired by his grandfather who was a great entrepreneur.

Around the Club

Caring Hearts Chair, Steve Becker, announced that fellow Rotarian, Tanya McKinney, was in the ICU for 7 days, but is home now and recovering.

Ina Miller announced that she shared lunch with Caroll Follingstad, spouse of the late Rotarian, Richard Follingstad, and that Caroll plans on joining us soon for lunch.

Long time Rotarian, Larry Strickland, has resigned from the club to pursue other interests since his retirement from United Way.

Mike Skolnick announced the winner of one of the raffle items, a range finder, was none other than Rotarian Donette Wagner. He showed the jackets that were sponsored by Rotarians, Marty Padilla, Waterstone Mortgage ,and Billie Adams, Peak Family Dentistry. If you want to order one contact Mike. The price is $40.00.

Mike Skolnick thanked Rotarian, Adam Moffett, owner of Slice Parlor for his donation of pizza to the golf tournament.

Upcoming Sgt. At Arms, Mike Skolnick, got in some practice by taking over for Mark Ormerod, who is traveling. Mike levied as many fines as he could.

Best Wishes to Maureen Anderson who celebrated her 80th Birthday.

Congrats to Ken Abbott for 56 years as a Rotarian. (All with perfect attendance!)

Jim Quick attended the Rotary meeting at the Carlsbad Rotary Club as the speaker and shared our project plans for the gala dinner for the Folds of Honor that we are co-hosting on September 8.

Many guests joined us Wednesday  for the presentation from New Mexican Historian, Rob Martinez, including 3 guests from UNM, who are working on a historical documentary, and a representative from the Albuquerque Journal. Two guests were so impressed and had such fun at the club that the they asked for applications and information about joining us.
