POLICE CHIEF HAROLD MEDINA

SHARES GOALS AND ACHIEVEMENTS

Chief Medina shared that the Albuquerque Police Department is moving forward with ambitious goals for the year and is already ahead of schedule to achieve these objectives. Chief Medina, who holds double degrees in both Biology and Criminology from UNM, believes in principles that focus on community and law enforcement partnerships. His efforts to transform the department are centered on creating a strong bond of trust with the community.

The APD initiatives center around four main areas:

First, the current situation involves monitoring by the Department of Justice. The Chief said that APD is following over 95% of the monitor's report with strict adherence to the guidelines.

Second, the progress in reducing the number of auto thefts in our community is noteworthy. Currently, we have dropped out of the top ten communities for auto thefts, primarily due to increased focus by our local APD. This is only the third time in 35 years that we have not been in the top 10.

Third, there's an increase in APD officer recruitments. 56 cadets will be graduating from the academy, which is the largest graduating class  in 10 years. Additionally, the January class may grow to 60 or 70, thanks to the recruiting efforts by the Mayor and City Hall.

Fourth, there's a strong focus on community engagement and trust-building. By teaching commanders to be better community servants, they have fostered better relationships with minority leaders and special interest groups.

In addition to these impressive improvements, the homicide rate is also down by 22%, aided by the many officers who have returned from retirement to help develop a detective's academy.

New Mexico Deca

Preparing Tomorrows Leaders
A visit from the Officers of New Mexico DECA was both inspiring and educational. Ray Henderson, Coach and Sponsor of New Mexico’s Officers, brought his entire team to share DECA’s vision of emerging leaders and entrepreneurs.

State President, Jason McCloud, informed us that there are 320,000 DECA students nationwide. Jason is  being nominated for the slot of National President next year.  His  Vice President and Social Media directors accompanied  him.  They are both aiding in managing the 29 DECA Chapters in New Mexico.  Jason and other current officers are part of a larger management team focused on DECA's goals and objectives, aiming to build confidence and give students the edge needed to become experienced leaders.

Training spans across Finance, Marketing, Hospitality, and Management fields. The State theme for DECA is “No Limits”, concentrating on avenues for success. Besides their developmental goals, DECA also emphasizes community service. Their recent project centered on providing bags of supplies for First Responders.

There are multiple ways to contribute to DECA. We can become a member as a business professional for only $10, sponsor one of their projects or conferences, or even participate as a judge in their various contestant events. For more details, contact a DECA member via nmctso.com/deca/@NMDECA

President's Corner
Dear Fellow Rotarians,

As we find ourselves immersed in the spirit of the holiday season, I am delighted to reflect upon the incredible achievements and moments of generosity that defined our Rotary Club in the month of November. It warms my heart to share with you the strides we made in extending our support to those in need and the impactful experiences we shared as a Rotary family.

November was, without a doubt, a month of giving. Our collective efforts culminated in the successful provision of food baskets to 15 homeless families at SARANAM for Thanksgiving. Witnessing the gratitude on the faces of those we were able to help serves as a poignant reminder of the impact we can have when we come together with a shared purpose.

Our Luncheon meetings were graced by two remarkable speakers, each offering valuable insights into their respective fields. Chief Harold Medina of the Albuquerque Police Department shared his perspective on community safety and the vital role we can play as Rotarians in fostering a secure and thriving environment. Additionally, Ray Henderson, the State Office Coordinator with DECA, enlightened us on the transformative power of education and mentorship.

The Manzano Mesa Backpack program, a testament to our commitment to the community, continues to thrive. We are consistently providing nourishment to no fewer than 50 students every weekend. This initiative reflects the enduring impact we can make on the lives of young individuals, ensuring they have the sustenance needed to pursue their dreams.

Looking ahead, we eagerly anticipate the Del Norte of Albuquerque annual Christmas party this weekend, an occasion that promises camaraderie, joy, and the spirit of togetherness. Furthermore, we are honored to be a part of the 1st annual Benny Hargrove Christmas Party for families affected by domestic violence. It is a testament to our commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of those facing challenging circumstances during the holiday season.

As we approach the conclusion of another year, I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt wishes to each and every one of you. May this festive season bring you warmth, joy, and the company of loved ones. Let us carry the spirit of giving into the New Year, continuing to make a meaningful impact on the lives of those we serve.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all!

Yours in Rotary,

Marty Padilla

Applause to Maureen Anderson and our dedicated RYLA team, who pledged to  support  6 RYLA students already and are reaching for  the goal of 10 students.  We encourage you to continue recommending exceptional High School Juniors as potential candidates.

Our Del Norte Foundation President, Carol Rickert-Asbury, highlighted the opportune moment to contribute to our Foundation for year-end tax benefits.

Recognizing the ubiquity of crime, our Police Officers of the Month were honored with gift certificates from Has Aslami and Pizza 9, along with a special survivor "candy" box from President Marty.
